When you first meet John Halani, he presents a rather calm, professional demeanour, but when he starts to speak about his many volunteer and charitable efforts, you can see the excitement start to buzz in the philanthropist’s eyes. Community service has been a longstanding tradition for the Ismaili immigrant, originally from Uganda.
Very nice to see this article about John Halani from the Canadian Immigrant. His award brings credit to all Uganda Asian immigrants to Canada. I met him first in Kampala during the Imam’s Golden Jubilee didar and now in Vancouver over the last few months. He’s all it says in the article – public-spirited, heart of gold, sharp mind and high-octane energetic. He’s the Honorary Consul for Uganda in BC, so at the forefront in promoting Uganda’s good name in British Columbia. He figures in my book about Ugandan Asians from all those perspectives. He’s taking a lead in ensuring the book comes out as a record of our contribution to Uganda and dispora countries. Join him/join me: Harambe. By the way it’s an Gujarati/Hindu contribution to Swahili; comes from Hari Ambe that the railway “coolies” used to shout out laying the iron tracks – Hari Ambe, Hari Ambe – Harambe! Of the >30k “coolies” 3k died. All this in my book.
