Rumi: The light that lights the heart …

The light which shines in the eye
is really the light of the heart.
The light which fills the heart
is the light of God*, which is pure
and separate from the light of intellect and sense.

–Mathnawi 1:1126-7, tr. Helminski

* Mawlana Hazar Imam made reference to this poem by Rumi in his latest speech at the foundation ceremony of the Museum in Toronto: “The light that lights the eye is also the light of the heart… but the light that lights the heart is the Light of God.”
