Food bank unites communities
TORSTAR NEWS SERVICE October 05, 2009
It took a crisis at the local food bank to bring Sunni and Ismaili Muslims of Flemingdon Park together for a common cause, alongside their Christian neighbours.
Flemingdon Park Ministry, an Anglican outreach program, has run the food bank in Flemingdon Plaza for years, but Rev. Helena-Rose Houldcroft said the church had reached the end of its means last spring.
Houldcroft let it be known to the food bank’s directors, and others in the community, that it needed more local support, including help from Flemingdon’s sizable Muslim community itself, who accounted for the majority of the food bank’s users.
Members of the Sunni and Ismaili came together for a food drive during the holy month of Ramadan.
The campaign had a goal of 6,000 pounds of food; in the end , the food bank collected 10,000 pounds.
