NEW YORK, March 30 (Reuters) – Rogers Communications, which owns Canada’s biggest wireless carrier, on Monday named Nadir Mohamed as its new chief executive.
Mohamed, 52, whose appointment is effective immediately, has been serving as the president of its communications division for the past four year.
His appointment ends a search that began when Canadian telecoms mogul and company CEO Ted Rogers died. Chairman Alan Horn has been serving as acting CEO.
Mohamed had been considered a top candidate for the job, along with Edward Rogers, the son of Ted Rogers. Edward Rogers oversaw the company’s cable operations.
“Nadir was the unanimous choice of our Board of Directors to succeed Ted as RCI’s President and CEO,” said Alan Horn, Chairman of the Board. “He is a highly regarded, principled telecom executive who has the demonstrated ability to build and lead strong teams and to consistently deliver strong results.”
“Over the past eight years Nadir has earned the respect of our Board, our employees and the investment community. The Board believes Nadir’s skills, experience, track record and firm understanding of the industry uniquely position him to lead Rogers through the next chapter in its history. We all congratulate Nadir and look forward to working with him in his expanded leadership role.”

His background as an Ismaili Muslim has also helped him.
“One of the key ethics of that Ismaili community is volunteering,” said Mohamed. “As a kid you learn very quickly to be part of committees and leading projects and initiatives, whether it is fundraising or helping out with elders.”
