Favourite Essays, Stories and Songs of Shellyza Moledina

Shellyza Moledina was born in Canada and is currently studying Pharmacy in the United Kingdom. Along with possessing a great interest for science and pharmacology as well as a passion for international development, this 20 year old is also a singer/songwriter.

Shellyza has currently recorded one album titled ‘Your Light Inside’. The album consists of eleven English songs, whose tunes have been captured from published artists. Shellyza writes the lyrics pertaining to different topics, matches it up to the instrumentals that she feels best fits her lyrics, and sings the new song herself. She is currently learning to build her vocal power as well as how to compose original piano music from various music studios.

“I started off with poetry, and then soon proceeded to lyrics. My song lyrics are to me, a profession of one’s deepest thoughts and emotional inspiration, expressed in writing.”

The first song lyrics that Shellyza ever wrote were titled ‘Jubilee-Shah-Kareem’. Shellyza describes this composition as particularly special, as the lyrics had first come to her mind while she was sitting in jamatkhana in Canada.

This English song is spiritual in nature, and it talks of someone who becomes spiritually rejuvenated after a very long period of weakened faith. This mu’rid suddenly realizes how much her Mowla loves her. Before writing these lyrics, Shellyza described herself as too shy to sing in front of large audiences, yet after the inspirational burst of these lyrics, she sang this first song solo, two weeks after writing the lyrics, at an Ottawa Expressions show in August 2007.

The song was soon proceeded by another composition titled ‘Mowla’s Eyes’, which was written in early 2008. These new lyrics talked of a global community of Ismailis who yearn to be within the sight of their Mow’la. The song then express the views and the love of the jamat through “Mowla’s eyes”. Within four months of posting the song with a collection of slideshow pictures on Youtube, the video had obtained more than 10,000 online views and several positive comments from around the world.

When questioning Shellyza’s choice of English for her religious songs, Shellyza replies:

“Along with appreciating and internalizing the various expressions of devotion in Hindi, Gujrati, and Farsi from our Asian and African forefathers, I believe that it is our responsibility of the Western jamat, to express our feelings towards our physical and spiritual lives in our newest cultures and languages – that is our Western heritage”

The eleven English songs in Shellyza’s album portray a variety of topics, namely the portrayal of spirituality, the love of her immediate family, the appreciation of her surrounding creation and nature, the illumination of an inner personal light, as well as the depiction of romantic devotion. The style of music ranges from country, to soft rock, and even into Disney-like music. Asking about this unusual trend, Shellyza admits with a laugh that her favourite artists are actually Martina Mcbride and Shania Twain.

Shellyza’s goal is to compose various music as well as lyrics, and continue to build up her vocal skill. She aims to one day publish her continuing works in an official recording company along with continuing her pharmacy career.

Came across miss Moledina’s Blog (exceptional!!) accidentally while searching for Loomba—interview excerpt from India today.

    Q. Tell us about your new album?

    A. This Sufi project came to me because I did an album like Sagari Rayn. The album is filled with devotion, spiritual, Irani, Arabic and Afghani rhythms, and soulful tunes. Sufism is having belief in every religion and being secular. These songs are ginans (ancient devotional poems of the Ismaili community written by Peer Saddrudin and Peer Kabirudin).
