Sudbury Doctors Raise Money for Northern Medical Students
Charity golf tournament helps give med students a boost with tuition
SUDBURY, ON, June 8 /CNW/ – The Sudbury and District Medical Society (SDMS) is hosting its 6th annual “Docs on Greens” charity golf tournament on Saturday, June 9th at the Idylwylde Golf Course. For the second year in a row, the proceeds from the event will go to the SDMS Medical Student Bursary Fund.
“We are extremely pleased to be able to help our local medical students through this charity event,” said Dr. Pierre Bonin, Sudbury District Chair for the Ontario Medical Association (OMA). “With tuition costs and student debt rising, it is important that we help support students pursue their goals in medicine.”
The event, which is expected to have 120 people participate, will also honour Dr. Zul Juma and Dr. Albert Melanson who will both receive the OMA Glenn Sawyer Award for their outstanding contribution to the medical community. Ms. Joan Mantle will also be receiving the OMA’s Community Service Award for dedication to local programs. The day will culminate with awards at 7:00 p.m. followed by dinner.
“It is important that we support medical students in the community and honour the work of our committed physicians,” said Dr. Bonin. “We have many bright and talented students in the North and their success is our success.”
Last year the bursary was granted to Jonathan DellaVedova, a medical student at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM).
