This film gives viewers a glimpse of the filmmaker’s personal growth brought about by his first experience with racism upon returning to Canada after living in Pakistan for 17 years. The realization that he was not accepted in this society quickly lead to the abandonment of the cultural & spiritual values & practices that were once an integral part of his life. It took the hauntingly insightful words of a virtual stranger on the streets of Northern Pakistan to make him realize all he had given up.
Canadian-born with a Pakistani background, Afzal Huda is an award-winning filmmaker and a photojournalist who has worked on over 10 feature films and television movies, including the Golden Globe and Emmy nominee “Into the West,” executive produced by Steven Spielberg.
Huda’s interest in the use of media to make a difference began when he was 14 years old. He began by writing articles about youth related issues in youth magazines, but quickly progressed to writing articles for respected citywide and international newspapers in which he gave critical analyses of governmental policies. At the age of 19, he decided to shift his focus from print to film in the hopes of reaching a wider audience.
His films have premiered on the national networks of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and have screened at over 15 film festivals and also recognized at institutions across North America from Canada’s National Arts Centre to University of Wisconsin. He has a passion for promoting the importance of cultural diversity.
