Research output increases in universities
6 January 2007
ISLAMABAD — The stress laid by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) on research at universities has started to pay rich dividends as research publications by higher education institutions in ISI-indexed journals in 2006 have shown manifold increase.
Compared to research publications by universities in 2002 which amounted to 788 for the whole year, the figure has increased to 1,636 articles and R&D organisations by December 30, 2006 thus showing a rapid increase in research culture being promoted by HEC.
Quaid-e-Azam University leads the group with 312 publications, followed by the University of Karachi with 226. Interestingly, 149 publications out of the total 226 are by HEJ Institute of Chemistry alone. The remaining 77, nearly 60 per cent, are from the Department of Botany. Aga Khan University Karachi is in third place with 189 publications, the University of Agriculture Faisalabad has produced 137 articles while the University of Punjab is in fifth place with 94 publications. Engineering universities of the country are not doing so well in the genre of research as NED University of Engineering and Technology, Karachi, had no publications while National University of Science and Technology has 21 publications to its credit. — NNI
It is important to highlight that the AKU is not a ‘full’ university, and as such – with a limited number of faculties – has done an amazing job producing over 10% of the countries total published research paper output!
I think if there was a faculty by faculty comparison for the areas AKU is engaged in (such as medicine / medical research) AKU would place extremely well.
Irrespective, I think the most important point is that Pakistan as a whole is increasing output with respect to research of the highest calibre. Excellent!
