Dr Shela Hirani Awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal by the Canadian Nurses Association

Dr Shela Hirani, University of Regina’s Professor and the former recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal from the Canadian Government, was awarded the King Charles III Coronation medal by the Council of International Neonatal Nurses in recognition of her contributions to nursing.

About King Charles III Coronation Medal
On May 6, 2023, Canadians celebrated the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. This historic event, the first coronation of a sovereign of Canada in seven decades, brought communities together to highlight themes that both King Charles III and Canadians hold dear. To mark this milestone, the King Charles III Coronation Medal was awarded to deserving individuals for their contributions to their community, Canada, or the world.


Dr Shela Hirani’s breastfeeding advocacy and research in Canada and internationally have amplified breastfeeding’s critical role in improving infant survival and made a significant impact by dismantling systemic breastfeeding barriers in diverse care settings, including disaster-affected zones, hospitals, post-secondary institutions, public places and workplaces where mothers often struggle to sustain their breastfeeding practices. Using innovative and multifaceted approaches, her efforts have empowered over 166,275 mothers worldwide through open access breastfeeding educational resources and built the capacity of over 5000 professionals to offer equitable breastfeeding services to mothers. In her +20-year career, she trained over 3000 nursing students, 1500 healthcare providers, and 100 community-based organizations resulting in the provision of inclusive services to over 5000 breastfeeding mothers per year.

While working with global organizations as a working group member for the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as Board Member and Regional Director for the E-Mediterranean Region for the Council of International Neonatal Nurses (COINN), Dr Hirani is advocating for innovative breastfeeding interventions, safe breastfeeding spaces for mothers, and inclusive breastfeeding policies and practices that is making a difference in society-at-large. She is an elected board member of reputable international, national, and provincial organizations. She is serving as an editorial board member of the reputable global health journals.

Based on the community impact of her work, Dr Shela Hirani has received over 50 national and international accolades for her transformative work in the community, including the WHO recognition as Top 100 Outstanding Women Nurse-leaders (Category: Community Hero), Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women Award (Category: Community Impact), YWCA Regina’s Women of Distinction Award, and Multicultural Leadership Award from the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, Canada. The community impact of her work for the multicultural community was also appreciated in the Legislature Assembly of Saskatchewan.
