University of Alberta Pays Tribute to Aga Khan IV Following His Passing

February 05, 2025 Edmonton, Canada – The University of Alberta has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community.

In an official statement, Chancellor Nizar J. Somji and President and Vice-Chancellor Bill Flanagan joined the university community in mourning the loss of a global leader known for his dedication to education, humanitarianism, and cultural preservation.

“The Aga Khan was a tremendous supporter of post-secondary education and a valued friend of the University of Alberta,” the statement read. “As an Honorary Degree recipient and through partnerships with the Aga Khan University and the Aga Khan Development Network, he helped advance education and global development.”

One of the most enduring symbols of the Aga Khan’s connection with the university is the Aga Khan Garden, Alberta, which he gifted in 2018. The garden, located at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden, reflects a shared commitment to knowledge, culture, and collaboration, embodying his vision for bridging traditions and fostering mutual understanding.

The university extended its deepest condolences to His Highness’s family and the global Ismaili community, recognizing his lifelong contributions to leadership and service. His influence on education and development will continue to inspire generations to come.
