In this episode of the Desi~licious Den: Dietitian on Demand, Shahzadi Devje, as a South Asian woman, talks about something unrelated to nutrition yet extremely important. It does not matter what your profession and background are because what’s happening in the world, particularly in USA, is a collective issue we MUST tackle.
Shahzadi has been reflecting on how South Asian people perpetuate racial injustice. The recent horrific events have forced Shahzadi to think about the silence within her own South Asian community regarding anti-Black racism. Shahzadi believes we have to acknowledge that it exists because if we don’t, that just makes us hypocritical. Racism is not just black and white. In Shahzadi’s commentary, she delves deeper into this and shares some proactive ways we can amplify Black voices in the Black Lives Matters Movement to fight racial injustice.

She is quite right. Pluralism is fashionable word amongst us but we look at it in terms of others attitude towards us. Those of us from Africa have sins of abusing and denigrating Africans. We still l them karias – a derogatory term. Pakistanis and Indians are no better. There are ex slave cronies there and they are discriminated against. Grand functions on pluralism or building centres are not enough unless they question our race prejudices.
