Alqaim Lalani is in his final year at the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa. He was recently shortlisted as one of the Top 50 Most Influential Young Tanzanians for his project Tumaini la Maisha (Hope of Life in Swahili). His project subsidize medical care for underprivileged children in Tanzania and the wider East African community by selling crafts such as handbags, jewelry and accessories that are designed and made by them. All proceeds go towards lessening the cost of chemotherapy. Materials used are native to Tanzania and purchased in bulk from small scale vendors. In the summer of 2018, Alqaim went to the Global Citizens Initiative at Harvard University where he was given the resources to make a more robust impact back home. This has culminated in his nomination.
