Rafeeq Kassam-Jiwani shines at Lower Mainland Regional Debate Tournament

Rafeeq Kassam-Jiwani shines at Lower Mainland Regional Debate TournamentBy West Point Grey Academy: On February 2-3, debaters from all over the city descended on WPGA for two days of intense competition. Beginning with the senior teams on Friday night, competitors from WPGA, Crofton House, St. George’s, Churchill Secondary and York House, to name a few, debated the right to free speech on university campuses before returning Saturday morning for their impromptu rounds. WPGA’s senior teams, Emma Blake/Tiffany Chang and Emily Hardy/Vivian Zhang, gave impressive arguments. They were fierce and persuasive competitors and ultimately dominated the tabs, with Emma winning top speaker and Vivian placing 3rd, Tiffany 4th and Emily 8th. Both teams advance to the provincial championships in March.

Our junior and novices were also successful: novice speakers Rafeeq Kassam-Jiwani and Annushka Agarwal claimed the top team trophy and tied for top novice speaker. Both continue to the provincial championships; juniors Ethan Jasny, Mallory Moxham, Edison Tan and Elena Wang will hopefully join them.
