Using the Yemeni synagogue chants and music of his childhood as a base, Ravid Kahalani mixed in a few other musical ingredients – jazz, funk and African music – to create the hot sound of Yemen Blues, the world music band he fronts.
A “new age culture music” Yemen Blues (founded 2010) is a mixture of Yemenite, West African, funk, and jazz. Each members of the band come from different backgrounds and bring their own sound and arrangements. The mambo and North African rhythms create a joyful and solid foundation, while the vocals remind the listener of ancient Arabic chants mixed with funk and blues.
Since 2016, Aga Khan Museum’s World Music Series has been connecting cultures and inspiring conversations. This season the series continues under a new banner of Global Conversations with the rhythms and sounds of Italy, Israel, Egypt, and beyond.
