Archnet: The mysterious, ancient Nine Domes Mosque of Afghanistan

Masjid-i No Gunbad. Balkh, Afghanistan

Built in the first half of the ninth century, the No Gumbad Mosque to the southwest of Balkh is one of the oldest known monuments of Islam. Its modern name, No Gumbad, refers to the nine vaults or domes that covered the original structure.

Built between the early eight century and the first half of the ninth century CE, the Noh Gunbad Mosque is believed to be the oldest and most important early Islamic-era building in Afghanistan and possibly in the wider region.
