Difference Makers: Stratford Hall's Inaara Merani has always heard the world callingInaara Merani

Stratford Hall IB World School (Vancouver)

December 23, 2015: Located in the slums of Mombassa, in the African nation of Kenya, the Kipevu Primary School stands as a beacon of hope, its full view to outsiders somewhat obscured by a safety wall which surrounds its periphery, a wall built of brick and mortar that stands nine-feet tall.

Back here on the Lower Mainland, on a Friday two weeks before the start of holiday break, a 17-year-old from Vancouver’s Stratford Hall IB World School is sounding a little breathless as she strides her way down Commercial Drive en route to the nearest SkyTrain station.

“I guess I’m kind of excited because it’s the weekend,” says Inaara Merani.

Typical teenage talk.

Yet when Merani is asked about that brick wall on the other side of the world, one which stands in stark contrast to the open urban setting of her own place of education and discovery, it soon becomes apparent that she is not your typical high school senior.
