“We at the Aga Khan Museum are deeply saddened by the loss of Abbas Kiarostami. He was one of the world’s great visionaries, who influenced generations of artists in Iran and around the world. Kiarostami touched us all through his poetry, his love, his astute observations of the human condition, his generosity and his gentle nature. It was a privilege and a pleasure to work with Kiarostami in 2015, helping him to realize a photography project that was 20 years in the making, Doors Without Keys. The Aga Khan Museum honours his life and his work.“
Doors Without Keys (November 2015 to March 2016) was an evocative installation piece comprised of life size images of weathered doors that Kiarostami photographed over two decades in Iran, Italy, France and Morocco. Mirroring the artist’s interdisciplinary approach to art, the exhibition was multi-sensory, and included sound, atmospheric lighting, poetry and short films. Doors Without Keys was the first solo artist exhibition at the Aga Khan Museum and included a rare visit by Kiarostami from Tehran for the opening.
