Iranian Filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami’s doors explore censorship | Toronto Star

Exhibition highlights celebrated Iranian director’s approach to living and working under censorship. “My feet may be in Iran,” he says, “but my head is elsewhere.”

By Murray Whyte for Toronto Star, November 26 2015: Abbas Kiarostami may be Iran’s most-loved filmmaker in the big world out there, but his new exhibition at the Aga Khan Museum here puts the difficult fact of his living circumstance in sharp focus: because of sanctions, dozens of life-size photos of ancient doors, photographed by Kiarostami over decades, couldn’t be shipped here from his home in Tehran. They had to be recreated here in Toronto instead.

This is the life Kiarostami, 75, leads: devoted to his homeland, he’s able to be a global citizen, sophisticate, artist and visionary, so long as his vision remains an oblique, poetic one.
