University of Alberta dentistry students break records in fundraising for volunteer missions

By Stephanie Dubois Metro University of Alberta: A 10-year old with dentures was something University of Alberta dentistry student Jameel Popatia didn’t expect to see when volunteering his time in the Philippines over the holidays.

Through an organization called Kindness in Action, Popatia was one of two U of A dentistry students who trekked to the country to help people with dental problems get the treatments they needed.

“As soon as we got there, there were hundreds of people lined up. You could tell these were the people that really needed it. Here [in Canada] you’ll see people who need treatment but it’s nothing compared to the way it was over there,” he said.

Tooth extractions were the most common problem seen by the local students and others who volunteered their dentistry expertise.
