Dr. Mohamed Karmali has been at the cutting edge of research into foodborne illness for several decades. He earned his medical degree at the University of Glasgow and specialized in internal medicine and medical microbiology at the University of Toronto. He became head of microbiology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and there he studied two of the most important causes of foodborne illness in Canada: campylobacter and E. coli.
You may remember the crisis in Walkerton, Ontario, in 2000 when the town’s drinking water became contaminated with E. coli. It was Dr. Karmali’s earlier work that showed that the hemolytic uremic syndrome the children in that community were developing was caused by this particular bacteria. Dr. Karmali also developed the system of classifying strains of E.coli and determining which cause disease in humans.
