Australia’s Foreign Minister Julie Bishop kicked off her three-day official trip to India by visiting an Australian Government-funded project in Nizamuddin Basti here on Monday, to oversee a project funded by her government and also pledged donation for a health plan. Bishop was accompanied by Australian High Commissioner to India, Patrick Suckling, on her visit to the Aga Khan Foundation.
At the Nizamuddin Basti, she announced a grant of Rs. 7.5 lakhs to the Aga Khan Foundation for supporting child nutrition through a women’s group — Zaika-e-Nizammudin — managed by the foundation.
This is the second round of funding to the Aga Khan Foundation from the Australian Government through its High Commission here under its ‘direct aid’ programme. The first happened last year.
She further said that providing women with opportunities and empowering them to become a part of the economy are important parts of Australia’s direct-aid programme. Bishop interacted with a group of women supported by Aga Khan Foundation and also went through the products designed by them.
