EDMONTON – At a time when fanatical elements have skewed popular perceptions of their faith, three singers from Alberta’s Pakistani community are trying to air the message of peace that’s inherent in Islam.

Calgary’s Barkat Ali, and Edmonton’s Karim Gillani and Athar Shahzad share a triple bill of both traditional and original songs in five languages Saturday at the Royal Alberta Museum Theatre with a range of expert backing musicians and singers.

“There’s an unfortunate perception in the western world that Islam is the religion of terrorists,” notes Ali, “but that’s not right. Terrorism is part of politics, not Islam. We want to educate people in the true message of Islam.”
