via School of Public Health – University of Alberta: When Rabia Bana MPH ’11 finished her undergraduate degree in biology, she wasn’t sure what to do next. Her four years of studies had focused on research in genetics and biochemistry, and she was contemplating a future in the laboratory.
“I realized that a research future may not be for me because I couldn’t see the big picture impact of the work I was doing,” explains Bana. Taking a year off, she traveled to Tanzania and volunteered with Aga Khan Health Services, on a project assessing chronic disease risk factors of a community in Dar es Salaam. It was there that she saw the direct impact of research on the lives of others. That sparked an interest in public health and global health.Upon her return from Tanzania, she started looking at master’s programs, specifically in global health.
Thanks to a testimonial from a friend studying at the School of Public Health, Bana decided to apply to the University of Alberta. “My passion for public health really developed when I got to the School,” says Bana. “I got to feed a side of me that I didn’t even know existed because now I could see the big picture and how my public health studies applied to the world.”
