Around two million people in Pakistan are affected by asthma which has inflicted children as well who are more vulnerable and suffer most owing to weaker immune system, according to Dr Javaid A. Khan, Professor and Consultant Chest Physician of Aga Khan University and member Medical Technical Option Committee of United Nation Environment Program.
Its symptoms include wheezing, coughing, breathlessness and chest tightness. This epidemic is controllable if common risk factors and exposure to allergens are avoided, he said while talking about new development on asthma control. Pointing at asthma disease burden, he quoted that approximately 300 million people worldwide currently have asthma and asthma has a significant impact on individuals, their families and society. World Health Organisation has estimated that 15 million disability- adjusted life years (DALYS) are lost annually due to asthma which is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways.
