More than a place to hang your hat: The Awali Adventure — Day Six
The message card left by housekeeping staff on my pillow was simple and beautiful: “Lala salama.” It’s a Swahili phrase that means sleep well and it’s just one of the many lovely touches offered by the Serena Hotel Group in Africa.
My journey with the Calgary-based Awali group has been one of contrasts. There are times when we’re sleeping in tents; hot water can be rare and electricity even rarer. It perhaps makes our nights in hotel rooms that much sweeter. Even more importantly, however, is the knowledge that any nights spent in Serena hotels translate into support for programs that provide jobs and training for local people, who could otherwise be living in poverty-plagued circumstances.
