Nur NGONur NGO, Tajikistan: Enriching Lives for a Brighter Future

In late 2001, four women from the town of Khorog in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO) region of Tajikistan wanted to set up a non-governmental organization for nine children with special needs. They started taking care of these children in a room in a kindergarten and asked for money to help pay the rent. With the help of an individual, these women set up what is now called the Nur Centre.

Members of the community began approaching the NUR Centre for support and advice and it became clear that there were many others in need of assistance. NUR Non-governmental Organization was registered as a Tajik, local NGO on 17th March 2002. So far NUR NGO has provided over $1.5 million (USD) in financial assistance to programmes throughout GBAO.
