Never say Yasmin and Fatehally Khoja show up at a party empty-handed.
As dozens of guests gathered at St. John’s Rehab Hospital Tuesday to celebrate the North York facility’s 75th anniversary, the couple announced a $1-million gift.
Having spent 35 years in Canada after immigrating from South Africa, the Khojas said the donation reflects their appreciation for all the benefits Canada has provided them.
Fatehally Khoja admitted peppering St. John’s president Malcolm Moffat with “very intrusive” questions to ensure the donation would be given to a reputable organization.
“I’m not going to put water in a bucket with a hole in it,” he joked Tuesday, laughingly remembering how his wife suggested he almost “killed” Moffat with his interrogation.
“This hospital has a bucket with no hole in it and the manager is managing it very well.”
The donation will be given in memory of Fatehally Khoja’s parents, Count Ebrahim Kanji Khoja and Countess Sakina Manjee Khoja, who gave to several charitable and community organizations, particularly health care facilities.
Meanwhile, Yasmin Khoja recalled the compassionate care her brother, Hussein Alibhai, received at St. John’s last November before he died of cancer.
Moffat thanked the Khojas for their donation, saying it will help St. John’s “reach new heights in rehabilitating patients.”
