Education: Grade 12 student advances to international level

Some peoples’ biggest fear in life is public speaking, but some Alberta students are warming up their vocal chords and preparing to come to Okotoks to not only speak in one of the most prestigious competitions in the province.

The best student public speakers will descend on Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS) Feb. 25 for the provincial Alberta Debate and Speech competition. Students in Grades 7-12 can compete in six different categories such as delivering a prepared speech, impromptu speech, acting and poetry.

About 20 STS students have qualified to compete in the provincial tournament, a new record for the school, said STS director of speech and debate and tournament organizer Lennard Fink.

“This is the best showing that we’ve ever had,” he said.

During the competition, the top Grade 10 or 11 students in each event will take part in a speak-off, where they deliver a prepared five to seven-minute speech to determine which four students will represent Alberta in the national competition to be held next February.
