A citadel in Afghanistan, thought to be founded by Alexander the Great has been restored and reopened as a museum thanks to the Aga Khan and foreign aid.
For many years, the city of Herat in western Afghanistan has been dominated by the ruins of an ancient citadel, the Qal’a-ye Ikhtiyar al-Din, thought to have been built by Alexander the Great. This week, Fox News reported the official opening of the restored building and archaeological museum to the public.
Hundreds of local builders have been employed in the restoration of the ruined fort as part of a wider community building project thanks to the Aga Khan Trust for Culture and funds from countries around the world, including the United States and Germany.
