Amir Suleman: A short and tall story of pioneer Ismaili Muslims to Edmonton

The beginning was not a smooth ride! My family of 5 arrived in Edmonton, Canada from Tanzania in the early 1970s. Jobs in Tanzania were being Africanised and so I travelled overseas to find a suitable place to settle in. My sister received us at the airport in Edmonton and we went to Bonnyville (a small town) away from Edmonton. After a week, we moved out of Bonnyville and back to Edmonton. My sister told us that there were no Ismaili Muslims except Akbar Remtulla, a professor at the University of Alberta and another Ismaili teacher in Rimley. She stressed the fact that it’s not like East Africa!

However, we decided to try our luck in Edmonton.
