We had an opportunity to go on a picnic a little outside the town where cherry trees were in abundance. We not only ate on the spot but also brought many cherries with us. It must be mentioned that Gilgit is situated by the side of a river of the same name.
In Gilgit in addition to a large government hospital, there is a network of medical services run by The Agha Khan Rural Development Foundation. As there is a large number of Ismaalis (A sect of Islam) in the area, there are a number of ‘Jamaat Khanas’ (community houses) which are not only meant for worship but also for administering social services to the people. All the services run by the foundation are spread over a large area especially villages.
As we wanted to know a number of things about the intricate history of the area, we visited an old scholar who was very hospitable.
