Historically, South Asian music flourished under the patronage of wealthy individuals and families. Today, in North America universities have become major patrons in supporting the presentation and understanding of such music, alongside community groups and music societies. Under the supervision of ethnomusicology professor, Regula Qureshi, Jessica Keyes and Karim Gillani have had the opportunity to study different types of South Asian devotional music in a distinctly Canadian context.
