Aliyah Mawji: Trekking through Tanzania – University of Calgary

Aliyah Mawji: Trekking through Tanzania - University of CalgaryDuring the UC International’s Group Study Program trip, the students, three faculty members (Aliyah Mawji, nursing, Jennifer Hatfield, health science and Lorne Jaques, social work) along with UCI GSP Program Assistant, Chris Reynolds, visited a number of preschools and clinics as well as a teacher training centre where they met with community members. For fourth-year nursing student Sarah Naundorf, the trips to the Zanzibar preschools held the most impact.

“It was a really effective community initiative that was completely owned by the community and that impressed me,” says Naundorf. “The preschools are all run by members of the community and the teachers—who most often are local—are given two years of training from the resource center and then return to the community.”
