Every day in our lives we hear that Toronto is a very diverse city. We know from Stats Canada’s report that by 2031, South Asians would make the largest visible minority in the Greater Toronto Area, yet Toronto City Council is not reflective of the increasing diversity of Toronto.
This might be about to change though.
Mohamed Dhanani is up against Councillor John Parker in the upcoming municipal elections from Don Valley West, Ward 26.
In 2006 elections, Dhanani lost by 214 votes. This time around, however, the situation is different. The second runners-up, Abdul Haq Ingar, of last time’s election has decided to back Dhanani. “Combined together we had 40% of the vote and John Parker only 20%,” says Dhanani of 2006’s municipal race.
