Hunza lake to start outflow in five to six days: Chairman NDMA | APP

ISLAMABAD, May 18 (APP): Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Lt. Gen® Nadeem Ahmed said Tuesday the Huza lake would start outflow in five to six days which may affect some 40,000 people living downstream. However, the government machinery was fully geared up to tackle the scenario with three-phase strategy focussing situation just after spillover, stabilization and rehabilitation, the chairman said while briefing media persons at Prime Minister’s Secretariat, here.

He said currently the water level in the 16-km long lake was 332 feet, increasing by 1 meter per day and the water would reach spillways carved out at height of 350feet in five to six days.

He said evacuation of upper Hunza, comprising 25,000 people had been completed and most of them were living either with relatives or at educational institutions.

Moreover, he added 2 helicopters were already at work while 5 more including two of Agha Khan foundation were being deployed to cater to needs.
