Last March, our beloved son/brother/cousin was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). At the age of 17, Alim underwent his first round of chemotherapy at the Princess Margaret Hospital. While we were all very happy to see Alim’s condition improve during his initial treatment, his cancer soon relapsed and since then, he has not been responding well to subsequent chemotherapy trials. Alim’s best chance of beating this cancer now lies in an emergency bone marrow transplant. As you may or may not know, finding a donor whose bone marrow is an identical match for a recipient is not an easy task due to the numerous genetic factors involved to ensure a safe and effective transplant, however, without finding a suitable bone marrow match, Alim’s chances of overcoming this illness does not seem promising.
What we humbly ask from each one of you is that if you are able and willing, to please take a few moments to check out http://www.onematch.ca OneMatch is a global bone marrow and stem cell donor matching network. By registering yourself and taking a simple and safe ‘at-home’ oral swab, OneMatch puts you on a donor registry and should your bone marrow be a match, you may have the opportunity to help Alim or the life of someone else in a similar situation. We understand that becoming a bone marrow donor is no small feat and takes a tremendous amount of courage and if you feel you are unable to register yourself, we would be forever thankful if you could spread the word to friends and family. Should you consider becoming a possible bone marrow donor yourself, we would be truly blessed by your limitless generosity, however we ask that you please first take the time to visit the OneMatch.ca and read all the information on the website thoroughly so that you are fully aware of what becoming a bone marrow donor entails. There is also a toll-free number you may call with a specialist who can field any questions or concerns you may have.
Also, if you are interested here is the link to a video which describes the OneMatch bone marrow and stem cell matching process in a bit more detail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5FcjD3jNuc
We are so grateful of the support we have received from all of you throughout this entire ordeal and would like to thank you, on behalf of Alim and ourselves, from the bottom of our hearts.
Sincerely,
Rumina & Karim Hasmani

Rumina and Karim: My heart is so full of sadness for you both and your family members. The
service yesterday was overwhelming with sorrow and yet over-flowing with tranquility. As a non-Muslim, I did not know what to expect but I have to say that I was immediately brought to comfort by the members of your Mosque. They were all truly welcoming. The prayer chants were so calming and beautiful to listen to.
I wish you all peace and comfort. Alim was with us in the past, is with us today, and will always be with us in the future in our hearts.
