Farewell to BC Olympics 2010

During my communication with the Ismailimail blog on the subject of patriotism and our ambitious achievements, the blog admins replied to me, I quote: “Our blog’s main focus is to emphasize the good and positive work of Ismaili Muslims. There are lots of negative messages and negative image of Islam being portrayed on the internet; we believe we can do better. We understand that there is a tendency among us for doing the volunteering work without telling (work no words) but it has become very important that someone does the work of telling as well. Hence, we appreciate you taking the initiative of bringing the selfless work of Ismaili Muslim volunteers to the forefront,” unquote.

Therefore, I bow and salute to all the glares of the jewels – our Ismaili Volunteers. We came from all demographic – young and old but we followed our tasks with efficiency and diligence. We were all clad in green. When we were on duty during the Olympics we bland like a family. Our involuntary thoughts were to do our best. We represented ourselves elegantly at all times while we were on duty. We also felt the Canada’s hospitality and our pride to be Canadian. This doubly gave us the courage to be humble. This humbleness brought one thing to my mind now, “I BELIEVE,” the Olympics theme song. In fact, we believed in ourselves that we can do better and we will be able to serve better.

One of the very best examples I can cite about our experience, when we had a situation on Georgia and Granville near the Canada Line entrance. An elderly lady fell and bruised her forehead. The Ismaili volunteers with their experience immediately cordoned off the area with a beautiful green circle with the security police so as to provide the deserving care to this lady. The paramedic and a doctor immediately took the care of this lady. She was given medical treatment on the site and later on the ambulance buggy came and took her for the further examination at the hospital.

We had minor hiccups, I am sure some of us required extensive orientation. But our motto prevailed, “TO SERV,” it made us aware and correct ourselves.

The time has come to say good bye and to say thank you. I believe we, the Canadians, are stronger, more united more than any one can think! These Olympic games have uplifted us. People know us. I held the Maple Leaf flag with pride and joy. I felt, I had won the gold medal. But truly speaking, we won the highest numbers of gold medal in this winter Olympics!

  1. Thoughts expressed beautifully. Ismaili volunteers did very well and made Ismailies as well as Canadians proud. Nizar Shivji and all who worked as volunteers should be acknowledged by the Jamat as well as the leadership for a commendable voluerry service. Keep the MyFlag flying.
