Composer Hussein Janmohamed and Campbell River Children’s choir join forces

The Campbell River Children’s Choir invites the community to a free choral event at 3 p.m. on Sunday at St. Peter’s Anglican Church.

The choir has joined forces with composer and conductor Hussein Janmohamed to work on processes in music making and sharing. The choir will work with Hussein on Friday and Saturday to discover how to create choral arrangements and to explore music from diverse styles and traditions. This will culminate in the Sunday sharing of their time together.

Hussein Janmohamed’s roots are Indian. Three generations ago, his ancestors moved from India to Nairobi, Kenya, where Janmohamed was born and lived until the age of six. In the 1970s, when Idi Amin appeared on the scene in neighbouring Uganda and began persecuting minority groups including Indians, the family moved to Canada.

Music has been a constant in Janmohamed’s life. It has provided him with solace, joy and a more profound connection to his faith. In particular, he has an overwhelming passion for choral music, a musical form mostly associated with western sacred traditions.
