Fighting poverty with cookies – Jasmine and Jaleesa Chagan

Two sisters from Fraser Heights are on a mission to end world poverty — one cookie at a time.

Jaleesa Chagan, 12, and sister Jasmine, 10, hope to raise $2,500 by May 31 for the World Partnership Walk in Vancouver, an annual event that raises funds to fight poverty around the world.

Since getting involved in the walk seven years ago, the girls have tried all the usual fundraising strategies — door-to-door solicitation, chocolate sales — but this year they hit on the perfect recipe: mom’s baking.

“We decided we needed to do something better, that people could just get from us, that they wouldn’t be able to get anywhere else,” said Jasmine. “So we decided we’d do cookies.”
