The Department of Humanities has been hosting a conference on Islam for more than ten years. So far the themes have been on Sunni Islam, so this year it ws proposed that the Shi’a, the second most important sect in Islam should be the theme of the conference. Dr Arzina Lalani received her doctorate in Islamic Studies and Arabic from the University of Edinburgh. She has taught at the Oriental College, Cambridge, and now lectures on Shi’i Studies at the Ismaili Institute, London. Her monograph Early Shi’i Thought: The Teachings of Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (London, 2000) won prestigious literary awards in London and Iran.
