Girls’ Education Support Program

Implemented by Aga Khan Foundation Canada, the Girls’ Education Support Program (GESP) will support the enhancement of girls’ education through activities that aim to increase access to quality learning opportunities and promote secure and supportive learning environments for girls.

Key activities under the program will include:

* Establishing early childhood development classes with teacher training packages;
* Rehabilitating schools to ensure safe and appropriate facilities;
* Accelerating learning, teacher training, management and leadership training in schools;
* Providing training to Parent-Teacher Associations and Community Education Committees;
* Providing women’s literacy classes; and
* Sharing good practices and lessons learned with the Afghan Ministry of Education and other partners.

GESP will work closely with the Ministry of Education in an effort to build capacity at the provincial and national levels to replicate GESP approaches, to develop common curricula, and to influence education policies and planning.

GESP is expected to benefit more than 100,000 girls and 4,600 teachers in close to 350 schools in Bamyan, Baghlan and Badakshan provinces.

  1. By engaging in activities that aim to increase access to quality learning opportunities and promote secure and supportive learning environments for girls is very commendable and a move in the right direction. It has for long been assumed that some how the glaring imbalances will sort themselves out but specific effort and initiative needs to be made just as you have set out to do.

    A key element however is to incorporate specific activities that will help to retain the girls in school and equip them to adjust to the attendant challenges they ordinarily face as girls. Accessibility is one thing but retaining them trhough school to complete a basic full cycle of formal eduation is pertinent and is what will give results.

    We will appreciate to learn from the strategies you adopt and the progress you achieve as model. We strongly believe it is more than just paying fees, but the attendant structures are important for a wholesome approach.

    Good work a head!
