An Edmonton doctor pushes the province to boost foreign aid

In 1998, pediatrician John Godel was about to retire from the University of Alberta medical school and head for the West Coast. But his good friend and colleague, cardiologist Zaheer Lakhani, had other plans for both of them.
A medical school in Uganda, Lakhani’s home country, was desperate for some teaching assistance, especially in pediatrics. Would Godel consider helping out for a couple of months?
Godel didn’t hesitate. “It’s a wonderful thing to get involved in,” he said, and 10 years later, he’s still going back.
