The inspiration for the Aga Khan Foundation logo comes from the right hand, a universal symbol of skill, achievement and caring.
The fingers symbolise the five pillars of Islam and the five senses of humankind.
The symbol was designed in 1978 by Zahour Ul-Akhlaq of Pakistan.

There are four central objectives of AKF:
1 – Make it possible for poor people to act in ways that will lead to long-term improvements in their income and health, in the environment and in the education of their children;
2 – Provide communities with a greater range of choices and the understanding necessary to take informed action;
3 – Enable beneficiaries to gain the confidence and competence to participate in the design, implementation and continuing operation of activities that affect the quality of their lives;
4 – Put institutional, management and financial structures in place ensuring that programme activities are sustainable without Foundation assistance within a reasonable timeframe.

You cannot begin to preserve any species of animal unless you preserve the habitat in which it dwells. Disturb or destroy that habitat and you will exterminate the species as surely as if you had shot it. So conservation means that you have to preserve forest and grassland, river and lake, even the sea itself. This is not only vital for the preservation of animal life generally, but for the future existence of man himself — a point that seems to escape many people. ~ Gerald Durrell
