This is not true.
Based on IIS release, my understanding is that this is not an original work undertaken by IIS. Instead, as clearly stated by IIS, it is an edited and abrideged translation of Da’irat al-Ma‘arif-i Buzurg-i Islami (The Great Islamic Encyclopaedia) by The Centre for Iranian and Islamic Studies in Tehran.

If you read the intro you will also see the line:
“In addition, some entries will be specifically commissioned for the new English edition which will not have appeared in the Persian.”
Whilst this may be understated online, it is common knowledge amongst scholars familiar with Da’irat al-Ma‘arif-i Buzurg-i Islami that it severly lacked in some less shi’i centric areas. This is not due to any bias but more due to the academic quality of some articles.
The fact the the IIS, as I believe it, has undertaken to translate and update the work means that I can claim that they have reached a high enough academic standard to make a significant contribution and they have taken steps to build on the previous version. They have published their own encyclopaedia!
