Walking all over poverty – 24 Hours Vancouver
A solution for global poverty is within walking distance.
More than 7,000 people set out to prove that point yesterday at Stanley Park as the Aga Khan Foundation held its 24th Annual World Partnership Walk.
“By participating in the walk we are allowing a young girl in Afghanistan to get an education and make up for lost time,” said Walk convener, Tasneem Bhimji.

OTTAWA – The 24th annual World Partnership Walk brought together tens of thousands of Canadians in seven cities across the country, Sunday, to fight poverty in the developing world. In Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Kitchener and Montreal, walkers came out in record numbers and are estimated to have raised more than ever. Tallies will be announced after the Walk takes place in Ottawa and London on Sunday, June 1st.

An international walk to fight world poverty raised $1.6 million yesterday in Stanley Park.
A volunteer for the World Partnership Walk said 8,000 people took part in the eight-kilometre walk around the seawall.
“It’s been a good day,” said Farid Damji. “The walk engages [many] Canadians in support of global poverty.

University Ave., meanwhile, was taken over by thousands of participants in the World Partnership Walk — organized to raise money to fight hunger in Asia and Africa.

“We are raising awareness about global poverty,” Rashy Esmail said. “Almost half of the world’s population live off less than $2 a day.”

Meanwhile, the Aga Khan Foundation Canada held its annual World Partership Walk in Stanley Park to fight global poverty, ending with a big party at Lumberman’s Arch.
AKFC is doing important work around the world to deliver clean drinking water, health care, education, and other valuable social services to people in poor countries.
His Highness the Aga Khan played an instrumental role in the creation of the University of Central Asia in Tajikistan. Initiatives such as this are helping bring education to the former republics of the Soviet Union and providing a useful bulwark against the spread of Wahhabi-inspired Islamic extremism in Central Asia.
