Canada still has an important role to play in Afghanistan.
We owe the Afghanis our help and should stay in that country until the job is done.
There has been some progress made in that strife-torn country, which still faces a lot of challenges and problems in the future.
Afghanistan has been at war with itself, in one form or another, since the 1970s.
It is not easy for this vast country to return to true democracy in a few years.
It will take time, effort, negotiations, financial help and a lot of sacrifice before the nation is able to stand on its own feet.

Sultan, I definitely agree. Having served in the US Military under the Navy and Air Force, and monitoring the progress of Afghanistan closely, I can definitely agree that it is a nation in transition as it has seen it’s fair share of instability. Even though we in the west see that facade of progress that everyone is so eager to talk about, the reality is that there is a definite set of traditions that run deep in Afghsnistan and there are very real dangers that persist in many parts of the country. Pressures of Taliban and the opium trade are definitely facing the country against unqualified law enforcement. Nevertheless, much progress has been made, and there is room for much more. The Afghans are a proud people and will not take directly, assistance from the international community as the excuse is that they have defended Afghanistan for over 500 years. Being it true, there are many grassroots requirements needed, but a very subtle approach needs to be taken. These are a group of people that are proud of what they had and need to be proud of what they are going to have.
