“Spiritual Sounds of Central Asia” presents some of the region’s most gifted artists in a carefully curated presentation designed to make Central Asian music accessible and meaningful to American audiences. Organized and produced by the Aga Khan Music Initiative in Central Asia (AKMICA), the tour includes 18 musicians from six countries, several of them appearing in the United States for the first time.
From Azerbaijan, the legendary mugham singer Alim Qasimov debuts a new program that features riveting duets performed with his daughter, Fargana, and accompanied by a virtuosic four-man ensemble on tar (lute), kemanche (spike fiddle), balaban (the Azerbaijani name for duduk or double reed oboe), and percussion.
