AKU: Dengue Virus – Separating fact from fiction

No vaccines yet, breakthrough expected in five years

Staff Report

KARACHI: Dengue is a benign disease with a mortality rate of less than five percent. It is a major misconception that patients infected with dengue are likely to die, Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) head of emergency medicine (and associate professor), Dr Junaid Razzak, said. He was speaking at the Continuing Medical Education Seminar organised by the AKUH.

The major cause of death in Dengue is actually dehydration, and not bleeding as is commonly believed, Dr Razzak said, adding that a dengue patient could be treated as an outpatient as well and hospital admission was not mandatory for all cases.
