A visit to Al-Azhar Park

That evening, we went to Al-Azhar Park, the most beautiful park in Cairo, to have dinner. The park is situated on a hill to the east of Islamic Cairo, not far from the Citadel, and on clear days you can get a wonderful view of the Muhammad Ali Mosque. The park is listed as one of the world’s sixty great public spaces, and was a gift to the city of Cairo from His Highness Aga Khan IV, the 49th Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims. It was inaugurated in May 2005. When the city gets too hot, crowded and noisy, the Al-Azhar Park is the perfect place to go. Here you can see the fountains coming up from the ground at the entrance of the park.

  1. Fred has a good command of the English language and his description of Azhar Park makes me wish I was there myself, listening to the sounds of the flowing water, feeling the wind course through my hair, enjoying the greenery and the view of this ancient city, munching outdoors on some succulent mishkaki at one of the alluring restaurants on the premises. What would we do without our imaginations.

  2. I was very fortunate to have been able to visit the Al Azhar park recently on my visits to Cairo. This was the first of my sight seeing trip on the very same day i arrived. Being a Friday afternoon, i saw scores of families, children and tourists enjoying the ambience of the various locations in the park. From its Entrance to the end of each of the borders, the park has breathtaking views of its surroundings. From one corner, one can view the entire Famitid colony which includes Imam Hussayn Mosque, Al Azhar Mosque and the Old Cairo and to the other, it has magnificent views of the Citadel. The people of Cairo are no doubt extremely fortunate to have had such a beautiful gift from His Highness The Aga Khan (whom many still do not know but must be saying a prayer for Him to thank him for bestowing this wonderful place). One could see families enjoying picnics, children enjoying their play areas and others just sitting down and reflecting. It was also very satisfying to note that the park was monitored by Al Azhar security so i felt very safe and secured. A truly magnificent and inspirational place which one must make a point to visit on their next visit to Cairo.
