Last year the Italian Institute for Africa and the Orient (IsIAO), with the assistance of Mountain Wilderness International and finance from the Italian Development Fund, organised a course for Environmentally Friendly Mountaineering in Afghanistan. The course was for a group of young Afghans keen to learn the necessary skills to obtain employment in alpine expeditions, as nature or trekking guides, or as rangers in the national parks that the Afghan government are setting up in mountainous areas.
